They say the city council’s proposal to put restraints on right turns into Grassmere St as part of the upgrade will restrict access. However, city council manager transport, planning and delivery Lynette Ellis said residents had only expressed concern about left turns into and out of Grassmere St. Left hand turns would not be restricted, she said. Ms Ellis has the backing of Papanui city councillor Mike Davidson, who said the proposal was “pretty close” to what the residents want. The plan includes new full-time bus lanes on Main North Rd – with two options for an upgrade at the Grassmere St intersection. IF I had my time again, I’d get into the film industry. Probably not as an actor – well 100 per cent not as an actor – but there are a lot of opportunities now for script writers, directors and producers. We showcase on page 5 today two young people who have made their mark with the short film, A Perfect Child, which won the award for best senior fiction at the Australian Teachers of Media Awards in Melbourne. Nina Hogg and Simon Brown from St Margaret’s and Christ’s colleges wrote and produced the film. That’s a great start to potential careers in the film industry. Hopefully their names have been stored away by those who can make things happen. The 18min film took a year to produce from start to finish and involved more than 65 students, mentors and teachers. –Barry Clarke

St Albans centre moves to Shirley MOVING: The transitional St Albans Community Centre is set to be moved to MacFarlane Park for further community use. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN

By Julia Evans AN ADDITIONAL $125,000 has been fast-tracked to move a community centre and maintain the goodwill of the St Albans and Shirley communities. The money will go towards a shortfall in shifting the transitional St Albans Community Centre from Colombo St to MacFarlane Park where it will be used by Shirley residents. The shifting of the centre, which was donated by the Lions International Club, was approved by the city council at its meeting on Thursday. A city council report said it was initially estimated $100,000 would be needed to move the building but more detailed planning has revealed it would cost $225,000. The initial $100,000 was approved through the city council’s Annual Plan. City council staff told councillors there would be time delays and a financial impact on the St Albans rebuild if the funding was not granted. “It’s a matter of urgency, it really needs to be moved.” A staff report said there would be a “loss of goodwill”

Innes Ward city councillor Pauline Cotter said it was a “great win” for the communities. “St Albans and Shirley have been a little bit under the radar with how hard they’ve been hit by the earthquake. This is a very good deal for council.” City councillors questioned

the cost but were told moving a building is more expensive than it may sound. “It sounds easy taking a building from one park and putting it on another . . . but you’re talking about car parks, you’re talking about making the building accessible, plumbing, signage, power, foundations. It is expensive,” a staff member said. Putting it at MacFarlane Park means the Lions “committed and generous” donation of the

building will not go to waste. It also enables the facility to continue being used after its original placement in St Albans. Cr Cotter confirmed Lions intended to gift the building to the city council next year. For the past four years, the Papanui-Innes Community Board and the Shirley Community Trust have been seeking a solution to the lack of a facility in the Shirley area.

Young filmmakers show big potential By Julia Evans NINA HOGG and Simon Brown of St Margaret’s and Christ’s colleges could soon be following in the footsteps of Kiwi filmmaker Taika Waititi. While Waititi has been smashing box offices records with his new movie Thor: Ragnarok, Nina and Simon have written and produced the short film A Perfect Child. The students’ film won the award for best senior fiction at the Australian Teachers of Media Awards in Melbourne. It tells the story of Ava, played by St Margaret’s student Tigerlily Perry, a girl who has lost her parents in a car crash and has been sent to an orphanage. She meets Madam Murphy (Eilish Moran, of The Court Theatre) who runs the establishment in a disciplined and firm manner. Ava soon befriends Lauren (Alice Taylor, of St Margaret’s), but finds out that things are not what they seem at the orphanage. When Lauren suddenly turns on her, Ava discovers a laboratory full of clones which the orphanage is trying to make into perfect specimens so they can be adopted more easily.

Northern Arterial down to the law By Julia Evans A BID to change the plans for the Northern Arterial on Cranford St will come down to an interpretation of the law. Last month Nor’West News revealed Small World Preschool and Nursery and the Cranford Ale House fear they will have to shut their doors if designs for the stretch between McFaddens Rd and the rural zone go ahead as currently planned. All on-street parking will be lost when cycleways are put in on either side of the road. Ale house owner Andrew Norton has enlisted the help of Christchurch Central MP Duncan Webb. The former Lane Neave partner and legal professor said in terms of changing the plans to include on-street parking, it will come down to an interpretation of the designs approved by the Environment Court last year. Dr Webb said “everyone is on board with having cycleways,” but the initial design had both cycleways and on-street parking. “The design has been be fundamentally the same as was approved [by the Environment Court] . . . it doesn’t have to be exactly the same,” he said. The city council sees the new

plan, which has no on-street parking, to be fundamentally the same, Dr Webb said. But businesses see it as a huge variance from the approved design, he said there has been a “raft of objections.” The MP has been in contact with the city council which will meet with the affected parties to discuss the designs.

“The list of people affected is growing by the day. It wasn’t well publicised but has got out by word of mouth and reporting,” he said Dr Webb said he’s been getting many emails from concerned residents as well as businesses, which now includes Kidd’s Cakes and Bakery. The final designs for the

Mural puts colour back in Mairehau

By Julia Evans HIS ART was some of the first on broken walls in the central city following the earthquakes. Now Richard ‘Popx’ Baker is painting a mural on the alleyway between Mairehau Primary School and Innes Rd. And the idea came entirely from children in the community. The Neighbourhood Trust and Child and Youth Friendly Cities have organised the artwork, which features Mairehau pupils planting a garden. Trust manager Ginny Larsen said it’s been a great result from a collaboration effort. “The project started two-and-a-half years ago when the trust was working with children from Mairehau Primary asking them what they liked about the area, what they didn’t like and what they would like to change,” she said. One of the main themes was that the pupils found

Mairehau a “bit grey” and wanted “more colour and vibrancy” in the area. The pupils took photos and made up a board of ideas. “One of the things they suggested was a mural,” Ms Larsen said. But the trust quickly hit a road block. Said Ms Larsen: “We thought this would

be lovely but we’ve got no money.” That’s when Child and Youth Friendly Cities came on board. Ms Larsen said the group really liked the fact that it was the voices and ideas of local children being heard. “They want more children’s ideas put into prac-

tice and bring some light into the city.” Photos were sent through to Mr Baker, who works on the mural whenever the weather is good. Many large-scale murals by Mr Baker feature across the city from a building at Phillipstown School to the “wall of love” in New Brighton.

Selwyn pupils win age group at jump jam final Selwyn House year 8 pupil Maggie Craw writes about her experience at the recent jump jam national final LIGHTS, CAMERA, pizazz. Selwyn House year 7 and 8 pupils Maggie, Jessica, Reed, Charlotte, Sophie, Emma, Yasmin, Eliza, Hannah, Catherine, Siobhan and Eloise were part of the national jump jam competition. Selwyn House entered the team of 12 in the year 7 and 8 open division, competing to ABBA’s Dancing Queen. Against the best of their age group in New Zealand, the Selwyn House girls came first overall with four distinctions (distinction being the highest) and one excellence. The girls finished with a stunning result and got the overall

highest mark through all age groups. The group got into the competition final after submitting a video to Brett Fairweather, the creator of the jump jam. They were up against all of New Zealand. Mr Fairweather chose the top eight entries to compete in each division at the nationals at Westlake Boys’ High School, Auckland. Selwyn House coach Megan Marsh was allowed to alter the jump jam choreography by 33 per cent to change it up a little. All the pupils competing put in lots of hard work, dedication and enthusiasm.

St Margaret’s mega birthday cake By Julia Evans IT TOOK more than 1000 eggs to make the 750 slices of cake dished out during the recent founder’s day service at St Margaret’s College. The school celebrated its 107th birthday with the giant cake. It was founded in 1910 by Bishop Churchill Julius, who convinced the Diocese of Christchurch synod of the need to establish a school for girls to match that already set up for boys. St Margaret’s was opened at 28 Armagh St with 50 pupils. In 1913, with a roll of more than 100, it moved into a new building on the corner of Cranmer Square and Chester St West. High school girls earn UK College speech diplomas FIVE RANGI Ruru Girls’ School students have achieved a university level speech qualification. Anna Bruce earned the Trinity College London speech and drama diploma, endorsed with distinction. Georgia Dunn and Georgia Woodley also received the speech and drama diplomas. Eliza Acton-Adams and Isabella Carter both passed their

ATCL communications skills diploma with distinction. ATCL is a professional qualification which has been assessed as the equivalent to the first year of university study and is the first step towards an acting or public speaking career. The five students have been studying speech and drama with their teacher, Lynn Williams, for five to seven years.

Rangi Ruru starts media empire GIRLS ARE taking control of how they’re framed in the media by producing their own magazine. Rangi Ruru Girls’ School students have published a new magazine – Shelter, the Aroha Edition. Head of media studies Jude Morgan said the production highlights the ability of teens to be ethical and responsible consumers of media. “Our students, for the second year running, have learned how

to create a media product that appeals to a target audience. From concept to completion, it is completely driven by students – the content, design and layout to print ready stage,” she said. The editor the magazine is year 13 student Olivia Mason. She believes in the magazine’s brief “to provide content that inspires, challenges and empowers readers”. Any student in the school can submit work or be involved in the production of the magazine.

Teacher earns award for excellence A ST Margaret’s College teacher has earned a national excellence award for her work. Linda Chong, the college’s head of the centre for innovation, won an Australian Scholarships Group national Excellence in Teaching award. She is one of 18 recipients from the country, selected from almost 200 nominations. Teaching was never a career path that Linda consciously planned to pursue. But the love of learning and the joy she gets in helping others has always been a skill she has loved to share. She has co-constructed teaching programmes and innovative technology, which has enabled her to integrate learning activities that delve deeper into student understanding and engagement. Now in its 21st year, ASG NEiTA gives parents, grandparents, school boards and councils and committees of management the opportunity to thank and recognise outstanding teachers.

INNOVATION: Teacher Linda Chong has been recognised for her hard work and dedication to St Margaret’s College students. Chief executive officer, John Velegrinis said these educators, including Ms Chong recognise that it takes a village to raise a child. “These teachers have an enormous responsibility in shaping and guiding these young people as well as supporting the educational aspirations families have for their children.”

Work on the Christchurch Northern Corridor has been directly affecting Papanui Primary School. Traffic is slow, there are often detours and drop-off and pick-up zones are always changing. So the Northern Corridor team decided it was “only fair” to do something positive for the school, team director Edward Husband said. “We know that the school is directly affected by our work, the drop-off and pick-up traffic had to change routes and many of the pupils live close to the new motorway alignment,” he said. Mr Husband heard the school wanted a new playground area, so the team started working on the idea earlier in the year. Papanui principal Paul Kingston said the school couldn’t be happier with the result. ”Our five-year-olds could not wait for it to be finished, they love climbing the pipe and riding their bikes and scooters along the paths. HOW TO COOK BARBECUE GRILLED BUTTERFLIED WHOLE CHICKEN

Ingredients

2 bunches Asparagus 1 Avocado 1 Lemon 1 Tbsp Extra virgin olive oil 1 Pepper 1⅓ cups Dried cranberries ½ cup Walnuts ¼ cup Parsley 1 to taste Salt & freshly ground pepper

1 whole butterflied chicken 1 to taste salt & freshly ground pepper Barbecue sauce Directions Preheat grill to medium. Get surface temperature to about 200 deg C. Clean and oil well. Clean the chicken if you desire and pat dry. Cut the backbone out of the chicken with sharp kitchen scissors. You could use a knife, but the scissors are much safer and work great. With a large knife, give the breastbone a large nick in the front of the chicken to help the bird lay flat. Rinse the inside of the bird out, trim any loose fat and extra skin. Pat dry again. Give the bird a good sprinkle of salt and pepper. You could use any seasoning you want here. Place skin down on the grill. Flip after you get a nice browning on the skin after about 12-15min.

Give the chicken a good brushing of barbecue sauce. Grill another 3-4min until the sauce is browning well.

To make the salsa, combine avocado, juice of the lemon, oil, diced pepper (yellow), dried cranberries, walnuts (toasted) and parsley. Season with salt and pepper and toss well. Cook asparagus in plenty of boiling, salted water for 2min or until just tender to the bite. Drain asparagus and arrange on a serving plate. Scatter salsa over asparagus to serve.

Total grilling on the second side should take 20-25min. Let set for 5 minutes then cut and serve.

News Huge turnout for bike show By Sophie Cornish THE SMASH Palace Bike Show took New Brighton by storm on Saturday. “It went really well, everyone had a ball,” said event organiser Jason Mill. Originally, 20 heats were planned for the demonstration but Mr Mill said on the day there was close to 60. Tony Hockley, 82, son of former bike enthusiast and founding member of the Pioneer Motorcycle Club Geoff Hockley, raced on the day. The event was linked to the late Mr Hockley, who was involved in the first ever bike races on New Brighton beach in the early 1900s. Event organisers had one lap planned for Tony, who ended up lining up for the next six races afterwards. “We couldn’t get him off the bike,” said Mr Mill. Between 3000-4000 spectators showed up and the seaside market said they had one of their busiest markets of the year, said Mr Mill. Originally the event was planned to be biennial, however, following feedback from spectators, Mr Mill thinks this may change. “The word I kept hearing was next year . . . if the community wants it, we will do it.”

She said the pieces do not often get a chance to be on display to the public so this would offer a chance to show off the art’s beauty. “The public can see the beautiful work that can be achieved, with practice, and become heirlooms of the future. Most of these pieces have been donated by tutors who have come from overseas on teaching appointment,” she said.

I missed the arson attack on Linwood North School on October 21. I’m mentioning it here because school fires are one of the most unsettling for communities to deal with. Students, teachers and parents often feel personally violated when their school is attacked in this way. In my experience and knowledge, it is very rare that school arsonists are old enough to vote.

In fact, often they are recent pupils themselves of the school concerned. It’s disturbing and sad that there are young people who can hate their teachers, peers and community enough to destroy the buildings that are the bricks and mortar of that school community. I hope the Linwood North arsonists are caught. If only to prevent a similar reoccurrence. Guy Fawkes will be over by the time this column is published. While things have improved from the wild west days of multiple fires and horrendous injuries, it mystifies firefighters why
